We invite applications to the UKRI AI Centre for Doctoral Training in AI
for Sustainability – or SustAI CDT – to explore the forefront of AI and
its application to environmental sustainability. Prospective PhD
students will be part of a vibrant community with 15 fully funded PhD
positions in this area annually, starting October 2024.

UK, EU and Horizon-associated countries (including e.g. Turkey and New
Zealand) are eligible for full funding, including fees, a £21.5k annual
tax-free stipend, and travel+equipment. The full list of
Horizon-associated countries can be found here:

The SustAI CDT research spans five themes where AI plays a pivotal role
in enhancing environmental sustainability:
•    AI for Sustainable Operations and Circular Economy: Optimise
manufacturing, operations, and supply chains to reduce waste and energy
use, improve resource efficiency, and develop circular economy models.
•    AI for Transportation and Logistics: Harness AI to support cleaner
transportation and logistics, reducing energy and resource use while
enhancing smart mobility services and sustainable transportation systems.
•    AI for Sustainable Energy and Buildings: Explore AI's potential to
optimise sustainable energy technologies, forecasting energy demand,
improving efficiency, and managing energy use in smart buildings.
•    AI for Biodiversity: Utilise AI to protect and conserve
biodiversity, monitoring ecosystems, identifying threats to endangered
species, and developing sustainable land management practices.
•    Sustainable AI: Focus on reducing power consumption associated with
AI, exploring efficient algorithms, and innovative hardware approaches
using Southampton’s world-leading nano fabrication facilities.
Techniques from multi-agent systems are fundamental to many of the
themes, such as transport and energy, as well as biodiversity.  We
encourage interdisciplinary research and welcome novel PhD proposals
aligned with one or more of the above themes.

The University of Southampton is one of the major UK hubs for
Multi-Agent Systems research, and was co-organiser of the AAMAS
conference in 2021 and 2023.
