Why should I attend chess camp? ê Chess develops academic skills. ê Chess exercises the brain and helps students to plan and to think logically. ê Chess builds self-confidence. ê Chess helps students learn that they must be responsible for the consequences of their actions. ê Learn chess from an International Grandmaster, from experienced coaches, and from members of UMBCás award-winning chess team. ê Chess is fun! What will the format be? 9:30­10:30 am Small group instruction 10:30­10:45 am Snack 10:45­12:00 pm Practice tournament 12:00­ 1:00 pm Lunch 1:00­ 2:45 pm Non-chess enrichment activity* 2:45­ 3:00 pm Snack 3:00­ 4:30 pm Special chess activity** *Enrichment activities will include a daily science and technology exploration. Participants will tour a different UMBC research laboratory or facility every day. With an emphasis on new technologies and computers, these site observations might include visits with UMBC researchers in cartography, virtual reality, cryptology, biochemistry and imaging. An introduction to the World Wide Web and Internet will also be included. **Special chess activities include simultaneous exhibition by Grandmaster Smirin; computer chess; team tournament; and student/parent showdown with Grandmaster to top off the camp week on Friday. What is the tuition? $250.00, includes chess set, t-shirt, daily lunches and snacks, and all enrichment activities.
