Computer Science Degree Production

NSF collects data on Science and Engineering education and research and makes it available through their WebCASPAR database. We've used this to generate some statistics on Computer Science degree production. In 1998 we generated data that showed that UMBC was producing more CS degrees than other peer institutions in the mid 1990s. We've updated the figures for 2004 which show that UMBC remains one of the top three PhD granting institutions in terms of CS degree production.

For the 2006 data, we selected all institutions where the highest degree granted was a PhD and for which 2004 data was available. The number of degrees includes BS, MS and PhD degrees. For UMBC, the figure includes both Computer Science (CMSC) and Information Systems (IFSM) degrees. Computer Engineering degrees are not included. Note that the data also inlcudes a graph of the degree production by institution. An excel spreadsheet is online if anyone want to play with the data. There is also a spreadsheet for degree production for all institutions regardless of highest degree offered.
