The Department of Computing Science at the University of Alberta
<https://www.ualberta.ca/computing-science/index.html> invites applications
for two Assistant Professor positions, starting as early as July 1st, 2023,
in the broad area of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, with
preference given (but not restricted) to the following topics:

   -

   ML/Deep Learning Theory
   -

   Reliable/Secure/Private AI Systems
   -

   Robotics
   -

   NLP (with a focus on ML/deep learning)

The successful candidates must hold a Ph.D. (or equivalent) degree by the
appointment date. They are expected to have demonstrated research potential
strong enough for a promising nomination as Canada CIFAR AI Chair
<https://cifar.ca/ai/canada-cifar-ai-chairs/>, evidenced by publications in
top venues (conferences or journals) in the above mentioned areas of AI.
They should also have strong communication skills and demonstrated
commitment to highly effective graduate and undergraduate teaching. They
will be expected to establish their own funded research programs, supervise
graduate students, and teach graduate and undergraduate courses. Strong
potential for productive interactions with other researchers in the
Department and in other disciplines at the University of Alberta will be
considered an asset.

The successful candidates will be nominated for a Canada CIFAR Artificial
Intelligence Chair, by the Department of Computing Science and the Alberta
Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) <http://www.amii.ca/>. Amii is one of
three institutes supported by the Pan-Canadian AI Strategy and represents
more than 30 core AI & ML researchers at the UofA; it offers a rich and
expanding interdisciplinary and collaborative network for AI research. The
CIFAR Chair includes substantial research funding for five years, and
membership as an Amii fellow.

The Department of Computing Science is one of the largest and oldest
computing science departments in Canada, and one of the best in the world.
The Department has 51 tenured/tenure-track faculty members and 7 academic
teaching staff who are recognized for their excellence in research and
teaching at the international, national, and university level. The
Department’s student population includes approximately 567 graduate
students, 1,193 undergraduate honors and specialization students and over
1,370 undergraduate majors/minors. Approximately 6,116 undergraduate
students are enrolled in Computing Science courses each term. The
University of Alberta is home to over 40,000 students from 156 countries
(divided roughly as 80% undergraduate and 20% graduate students) and 600
postdoctoral fellows.

      present an overview of their planned research program for ~5 years
      after initial appointment,

      describe how the candidate will interact, collaborate with, and
      complement other researchers at the University of Alberta.

   A 1-2 page teaching statement including their experience and interests.
   -

   A 1-2 page equity, diversity, and inclusion statement which includes the
   candidate’s contributions and plans to advance EDI in their research,
   teaching, mentoring, and service.
   -

   A recent peer-reviewed published contribution to their field of
   research, that best exemplifies their research.
