The Lumiere project of the Decision Theory & Adaptive Systems Group at Microsoft Research has the goal of developing methods and an architecture for reasoning about the goals and needs of software users as they work with software. At the heart of Lumiere are Bayesian models that capture the uncertain relationships between the goals and needs of a user and observations about program state, sequences of actions over time, and words in a user's query (when such a query has been made). Microsoft Office '97 includes character-based assistants which draw their intelligence from Bayesian user models. 3/31/97
MAGENTA (Mobile Agents for Telecommunication Applications) is a project at TU Berlin whose goal is to design a comprehensive framework (MAGENTA agent framework) for the development of agent-based telecommunication applications. Additional framework constituents which will be realized in the course of the MAGENTA project, are a CORBA and Java based reference platform for agent systems (MAGENTA Agent Platform), a design and development methodology, corresponding tools and generic application components which can be used as building blocks for new, agent-based telecommunication applications. Analysis and design methods, tools and generic components will form the basis for the long-term development of an integrated agent development environment (MAGENTA Agent Development Environment). 8/11/96
The KIMSAC project (Kiosk-based Integrated Multimedia Service Access for Citizens) uses a "personal sevice assistant" to mediate between users and information services. It is being carried out by the KIMSAC Consortium and is sponsored by RACE, Research and Technology Development in Advanced Communication technologies in Europe. Agent technology under consideration includes KQML and KIF. 8/11/96
AARIA, Autonomous Agents at Rock Island Arsenal, is an ARPA-sponsored project designing an autonomous agent based factory scheduler at the Rock Island Arsenal. The project team is headed by Intelligent Automation, Inc. (Rockville, MD) and includes the University of Cincinnati, Industrial Technology Institute, and Flavors Technology, Inc. The agents, programmed in objective-C and running on a network of Pentium based computers under PDO (Portable Distributed Objects), will actively represent each step on the ladder of manufacturing a part: going from the customer, through the sales representative, engineers, manufacturing processes, and finally to the raw materials. 7/29/96
Project: ADEPT: Advanced Decision Environment for Process Tasks is a project of the DAI group at Queen Mary and Westfield College, London. It is modeling business processes as a collections of autonomous, problem solving agents which interact when they have interdependencies. A recent paper is: N. R. Jennings, P. Faratin, M. J. Project: ModelAge is an ESPRIT Basic Research Working Group focused on establishing a common formal model of the concept of agent. ModelAge is divided into specialist groups: SG1: Defeasibility of agent facets, SG2: Logics and models of action,SG3: Norm-governed interaction in organizations, SG4: Software Development Process, and SG5: Diagnosis, Repair and Industrial Control. 5/9/96
Project: SRI's The Open Agent Architecture project is developing an architecture and accompanying user interface for networked desktop and handheld machines. The system support distributed execution of a user's requests, interoperability of multiple application subsystems, addition of new agents, are served by a multimodal interface, including pen, voice, and direct manipulation. 5/8/96
Project: The Enterprise Project is a collaborative effort led by AIAI and including IBM UK, Lloyd's Register, Logica and Unilever. It's goal is "To improve and where necessary replace existing modelling methods with a framework for integrating methods and tools which are appropriate to enterprise modelling and the management of change. The Enterprise project is aimed at providing a method and computer toolset which will help capture aspects of a business and analyze these to identify and compare options for meeting the business requirements." The foundation for this effort is the Enterprise Ontology, a collection of terms and definitions relevant to business enterprises, represented in Ontolingua. 3/31/96
Project: Project PageSpace (TU Berlin and the University of Bologna) aims at supporting networked applications which require interaction between distributed software components and active processing. It is based on the Internet and the World Wide Web but introduces a notion of active Web-pages that are capable of executing code. 3/10/96
Project: Human Computer Interaction---Intelligent Browsing Agents is an ARPA-sponsored project at OSF whose goals include making the WWW infrastructure agent-ready and agent-aware and providing an extensible set of agents that access info sources, network and user knowledge in the service of user-related objectives. 1/19/96
The PARAgente project in the Hypermedia Research Lab at Texas A&M University is investigating issues in agent-based user interfaces, especially as they apply to hypermedia and digital libraries. 10/22/95

ARCHON (ARchitecture for Cooperative Heterogeneous ON-line systems), Europe's largest DAI project devised a general-purpose architecture, software framework, and methodology used in a number of real world industrial domains.10/7/95
KACTUS is an European ESPRIT-iii project aiming at the development of a methodology for the reuse of knowledge about technical systems during their life-cycle ( i.e. using the same knowledge base for design, diagnosis, operation, maintenance, redesign, instruction, et cetera). The way this will be achieved is by giving these knowledge bases an explicit structure (often called an ontology). 9/30/95

TACOMA This project at the University of Tromsø, Norway and Cornell focuses on operating system support for agents and how agents can be used to solve problems traditionally addressed by operating systems. We have implemented prototype systems to support agents using UNIX and using Tcl/Tk on top of Horus. (They take an agent to be a process that may migrate through a computer network in order to satisfy requests made by clients.)9/14/95
Silk - A New Internet Resource Discovery Client Silk, Bunyip's new Internet client program, allows you to access and search for Internet information without having to know where to look or how to look. It is based on the notion of a Uniform Resource Agent or URA. 8/29/95

The CoBase Project at UCLA is developing intelligent and cooperative (approximate, summary, and conceptual) access methods to distributed and large-scale database systems.
Guardian: A Prototype Intelligent Agent for Monitoring Intensive-Care and other Medical Patients -- A Stanford project involving dynamic run-time configuration of appropriate reasoning methods and knowledge components, context-relevant selective perception, and situation assessment, planning, & plan monitoring in a dynamic environment. It uses the BB1 software architecture.
Softbots (Oren Etzioni et al.) -- Building autonomous agents that interact with real-world software environments such as operating systems or databases is a pragmatically convenient yet intellectually challenging substrate for AI research. To support this claim, we are utilizing planning and machine-learning technology to develop an Internet softbot (software robot), a customizable and (moderately) intelligent assistant for Internet access.
Intelligent Web Agents/Houston (IWAH) is a project researching the design and implementation of intelligent, ethical agents for the World Wide Web at the University of Houston - Clear Lake.
MailBot is "an intelligent rule-based message processing agent for Microsoft Mail that can sort and filter messages and automatically respond to E-Mail.
