SCOPE
The dramatic evolution in the availability of data in various forms from various sources is creating many fundamental challenges in computing, communication, storage, and human computer interaction issues for data mining. Several novel data mining application areas are fast emerging. These developments call for new perspectives and new approaches.
The National Science Foundation Workshop on Next Generation Data Mining (NGDM'02) will bring together data mining researchers and practitioners from diverse backgrounds for exploring the challenges and future research directions in data mining.
The NGDM02 will focus on the following areas:
1) Data Mining for
Pervasive, Distributed, and Stream Applications
2) Data mining for
Counter-terrorism
3) Scientific Data Mining
4) The Web, Semantics,
and Data Mining
Even though these issues seem disparate, they are closely intertwined. For instance, electronic and signal intelligence data which needs to be mined for counter terrorism is often composed of several data streams collected in a distributed environment. Similarly, scientific data mining may benefit from high throughput online algorithms and semantics. The workshop will have single track, and all participants are expected to contribute in each of the areas.

CALL FOR PAPERS (Regular Presentations)
We would like to invite paper submissions from data mining researchers and
practitioners. The papers should be relevant to the focus areas of
NGDM'02. The papers must present innovative research directions that may
be suitable for the agenda of the workshop---next generation data mining
challenges. Submitted papers should not exceed 10 pages. The workshop will
accept only electronic submission of papers in PDF or Postscript format to
hillol@cs.umbc.edu with "NGDM02 Submission" in the subject line. The
papers will be included in the NSF Workshop Report. The workshop will also
produce an edited book published by the AAAI/MIT Press. Extended versions
of the selected papers will be included in the book.

"NGDM02 Demo Proposal" in the subject before September 20, 2002.

Selected papers from the workshop will be published in the form of an edited book, entitled "Data Mining: Next Generation Challenges and Future Directions", by AAAI/MIT Press. The book chapters (by invitation only) should not be more than 20 book pages. The style files are available here. Please send your chapter to siva@eecs.wsu.edu before December 15, 2002. Please write "NGDM'02 Book Chapter" in the subject line of the e-mail.
