Dr. Carter is carrying out research in transmission of data at high channel rates over long distances in optical communication systems. He has successfully transmitted 10 Gigabits/sec over 24,500 km, 20 Gigabits/sec over 20,000 km, and 40 Gigabits/sec over 6400 km at low error rates.
