CMSC 491S / 691S Web Based Service Oriented Computing for Science, Engineering and Commerce

TTH 5:30-6:45p.m. M. Halem, Y. Yesha

This course addresses the concepts and techniques of service-oriented architectures (SOA) with a focus on web service computing applications for scientists, engineers and business majors. The course will introduce the basic Web services protocol standards such as XML, SOAP, UDDI, WSDL for invoking autonomic computer to computer interactions. Students will be expected to gain hands on experience in applying these software language standards in building web services in the above disciplines through assigned projects. In support of student SOA project implementations, the course will make available access to two very high-end IBM clusters connected by a lambda wave optical network as well as a tiled hyperwall for visualization services. A brief review on the use of these systems will be presented. Moreover, students will also have the opportunity to gain experience with advanced IBM software tools such as the IBM Websphere Bus Integration Server and Studio Application Developer Integration Server for choreographing processes and the IBM Debugger and Wizard tools. In particular, the course will emphasize the role of optical communication, data retrieval, work flow management and grid computing that is bringing about this revolutionary SOA paradigm shift in the application of information technology cyberinfrastructures for science and engineering processes. Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD

Prerequisites: CMSC 621/421 or CMSC 681/481 or permission of the instructor.
