Craig Jones Wins UMBC Open Alan T. Sherman Faculty Advisor, UMBC Chess Club March 27, 1994 With a perfect 5-0 score, UMBC's Craig Jones (computer science) won the UMBC Open Chess Tournament held March 26-27 in the University Center Ballroom. Tied for second place were Damon Norko, Denis Strenzilk, and UMBC's Kimani Stancil (physics and math) and Ishan Weerakoon (computer science), each with 3.5 points against strong competition. The five-round tournament attracted twenty chess enthusiasts, including five masters and three experts. The tournament was conducted in the swiss system: at each round, players with identical tournament scores played each other. Contestants earned 1~point for a win, 0.5 points for a draw, and 0 points for a loss. Organized and directed by Chris Todd (biochemistry), the tournament was officially sanctioned by the United States Chess Federation. In December, playing Board 1, Jones helped the top UMBC chess team earn a third-place tie at the prestigious Pan-American Intercollegiate Chess Tournament in DeLand, Florida.
